I used a hack saw blade with duct tape wrapped around the end to saw at the
thing without removing anything around it.  Took soem time and wasn't
pleasant but I wasn't comfortable at that point removing more stuff.

I was able to chisel mine off (CAREFULLY) with a small chisel. It's a little
difficult to get in there, but have done it this way several times. I don't
believe (or remember!) ever gluing them back on.
