Poor running 3B ---FIXED!---

Yep! Went out to Anderson Motors Sports (owners drives a 91 Avant) They
had a used MAF from a S6, same part number. Plugged it in and all is good.
Also the used MAP got rid of the reoccurring code I was getting for O2
sensor and ISV. No more codes, never had a MAF code.
New problem is, was driving last night and lost Power Steering and Brakes,
limped home, reservoir empty and no green gold dripping from anywhere under
the hood. Dumped in my spare can and got steering and brakes working
after a short drive pumping the brakes. The liter I added did not fill the
reservoir (used flashlight and verify that. Reservoir was MT last night when I
parked the car. This morning when I opened the hood, I was surprised to
see the reservoir near full, went down to about a third after starting the
car and turning the wheel and pumping the brakes.
Went and bought some more green gold today, topped it off and drove 30
miles, no leaks and all works. Got no idea what is going on there. Did have
a puddle about a year ago where it puked out some green gold (once only),
and than there was also no sign of a leak under the hood, pump rack, hoses
etc. Presumed it might be out of sight in the brake booster. WTF!!
Did notice that gasket under the PS reservoir cap is bad and would probably
leak some air in, but all dry around the cap. Never got a red brake light
during this. My autocheck light does not work on the dash and I do have an
occasional beep, but that has been there for awhile.
Sure would be nice to have a newer car!
Thanks,Pete

Cap, rotor, wires, plugs and wires have about 40k on them. Look good and
dry. Started car yesterday no difference, am going to pull codes today.
Thanks, Pete

Its possible, but I wouldn't condemn it yet. You mentioned ice storm and
rainy... how old are your wires? how about the cap and rotor? Id pull that
and dry them off first and see what that does. If they are new and decent
then you might be looking at a maf. When my MAF went it was pretty smokey at
idle and couldnt pull any boost at all. not even 1 psi

Think you jinxed me! Was driving home in the worst ice storm I have seen
in Minneapolis. Car suddenly starting running like crap. Bucks, wont
usually idle unless I hold the peddle down a bit, must accelerate very slowly
to make any speed. Bummer!
Car ran perfect before, however had two intermentant codes. O2 sensor and
ISV. Have had an O2 sensor on order, first one came in wrong part. Did
not pay much attention to the ISV because the car ran perfect (238k miles).
Unplugged the MAF sensor, no difference in car running, pressured turbo
and vacuum system to 15 psi, no leeks, pulled and cleaned MAF, no difference.
Started to rain again (have to work out side) so I quit for the day. Will
clear and pull codes tomorrow.
Think I am on the right path with the MAF?
Thanks

Well thanks to VAG com... this morning I pulled the codes, there was only
1.
MAF. I was actually kind of happy to see it. So I went online (audifans
marketplace to the rescue!) found one a few hours away from me for a good
price
so I went to go get it. Came back about half an hour ago, installed it and
all
my problems went away! Idles great, no smoke, runs amazing, and pulls like
nobody's business! I am so unbelievably relieved. It was cold so I gave
it a
little temperature, and got to maybe 12psi boost and it was effortless and
smooth as silk. Ill definitely sleep well tonight! Or maybe not...Ill want
to
get up early and go drive it!
Thanks for everyones help, I appreciate it. Looks like Im good to go now.
Here's a picture of the patient. Its a 1985 UrQ with 3B that has all the
RS2
goodies. Therefore Its painted RS2 Pearl blue. It has the tall wing,
blacked out
rear lights, euro lights up front and sport hood.
This was an 'in progress' picture, you will notice its missing the drivers
side
windshield wiper, has the 5000q wheels on it (winter tires) with no center
caps,
and the front grills for the sport hood arent clipped in, they are just
laying
there. Thats all been fixed now (except the 5000 wheels, the sport q
wheels wont
go on till summer). _http://maxboostracing.com/RS2UrQ.jpg_

Since you have VAG--COM, have you checked Group 0 , the one that has many
operating conditions like load, intake air temp, RPM, TPS, etc? It is
designed
to be read at idle and lowish RPM. The Bentley will tell you what the in
spec
ranges are for the various readings.
Your MAF may only be slightly out of spec, which means it may only need
cleaning.
Cheers,
Brady
