If you're willing to pump out gasoline out of the tank,
then you don't need any tools - just your hand.

All you need to do is to twist the assembly out of the cradle, and
twist it into the cradle. I've done that four times, two 91 200Q 20Vs
and two 89 200 10Vs in the last 4 or 5 years. Shin

Anybody had luck getting the lid off the fuel pump holder without the
VAG3214 tool? Need to change out the check valve and so I need to get the
pump out of the tank. All nice and clean down there which surprised me.

Whatever has to be done has to be done one handed. Blasted Teutonic factory
tools! Pump made 208k miles. No one has ever been in there I am sure.
Factory insulation was still taped over the lid.
