Shipping a Car Cross Country

I searched the archives and there were a few threads on this on a
couple of the lists, but no real consensus.

I'm interested in shipping a car from the Bay area, CA to central NC.
I put my vital stats into a couple of quote sites and got deluged with
quotes anywhere from $825 to $1100 for open carrier shipping.  My
budget is about a grand.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with shipping a car that
kind of distance?  How did it work out?  And is there anything
specific about the departure and arrival states that I need to be
aware of?
