Convert/retrofit to R134a or stay R12?

I bought some direct replacement for R12 that mixes with the old stuff.  Used it in a 1981 Vette with good results.  Did a 134A replacement in my old 5000 Avant, never blew cold and had to recharge every year.

Can't remember what it was called but it worked good.

I have to replace the compressor on my 200q20v.  Have people had good luck 
retrofitting to R134a, or is it better to stick with R12?  

I'm in hot Arizona, so a marginal system is not desirable.

I get the impression from initially searching that a retrofit isn't totally 
terrible.
