Convert/retrofit to R134a or stay R12?

I tried the mix-in stuff on my GTI 16v and 200q20v, it worked for a while
then didn't. Most shops won't touch anything that isn't straight R12 or
R134a, BTW. After that I had good luck going the R134a retrofit route -
replaced the dryer, used the ester(?) oil, also replaced the expansion block
that had failed on VW and upgraded the orifice valve on the 200 with "smart
variable orifice valve" from acsource.com. And some new viton o-rings on
every reachable hose connection. Good performance on the hot dry days in
Boise. I still have some spare o-rings from a compressor kit for the 200
that I forgot to give to the new owner, if anyone needs them. Definitely
hoping to avoid any A/C maintenance on the B7 A4 for a while.
