rear diff front cover

After quite a few distractions and some battling with fasteners and the
cross member I am now at the point where I am ready to pull the front
cover off of the rear diff to get at the front seal (which had a gushing
leak) and maybe the bearing (horrible momentary noise at road speed just
before the leak). Have been prying in the slots provided and broke a
very small chunk of aluminum off of the cover near one of the slots so
no more prying on that side. The manual says grab on of the screw holes
with a slide hammer and remove. It hasn't budged yet. The cutaway of
that thing shows a simple tight slip fit with an oring to seal. Seems
like it shouldn't be fighting me so hard. Something I am missing? Other
tips, suggestions, etc...?
