rear diff front cover

After quite a few distractions and some battling with fasteners and the 
cross member I am now at the point where I am ready to pull the front 
cover off of the rear diff to get at the front seal (which had a gushing 
leak) and maybe the bearing (horrible momentary noise at road speed just 
before the leak). Have been prying in the slots provided and broke a 
very small chunk of aluminum off of the cover near one of the slots so 
no more prying on that side. The manual says grab on of the screw holes 
with a slide hammer and remove. It hasn't budged yet. The cutaway of 
that thing shows a simple tight slip fit with an oring to seal. Seems 
like it shouldn't be fighting me so hard. Something I am missing? Other 
tips, suggestions, etc...?
