Sounds like you lost the cover bearing, causing the seal failure, or worse, a pinion bearing or two also. Any play, radial or axial, in the input flange shaft? If you can’t pry the cover off, I would attach a slide hammer to the input flange and pound it loose. Should pull out in one piece. If the total problem is not just the cover bearing but also a pinion bearing, you are in deep dodo! Inasmuch as the the pinion will have to be reshimmed correctly. No DIY job, unless you are a well equipped expert. Good luck!
