It has to be extremely dark to see this red glow.  It's not meant to be 
bright, but you should see redness on your hand down near the radio controls.
This light is adjustable with the gauge lighting as well.

I have no clue here as my car (gladly) doesn't have this feature.

Hold it for a few seconds.   It's delayed.

I've been wondering this myself.  My guess is that it's adjustable via the 
computer connection to the car.  You can order a VAG-COM and go through the 
setups or take it to the dealer.  I doubt the dealer has had many requests 
for it though and may look at you like a leper.
