[A4] New car considerations

First of all, you have the older A4, so you'll see a
huge difference in power between the 6 in yours vs.
the 4 in the new model. I drove the DSG auto on the
A3, and it wasn't even close in feel to the sluggish
auto in my 98 A4.
I really like the sound/feel of my engine, but the 4
cyl was very nice (I always found the 1.8T to be rough
and loud). I wouldn't think twice about choosing the
4 in the '06 model - it is much smoother and
dramatically more powerful than both the old 4 (stock)
and my 6. There is a hint of roughness at low (very
low)revs, but that disappears when you build up even
the slightest amount of engine speed.
Sounds like the A3 trunk might be too small for you.
I would suggest test-driving the A4 Avant and the A3
in the transmission of your choice and deciding
accordingly. If you are leaning towards an auto
stick, then the DSG may sway you towards the A3 (I
don't think the A4 comes in that option). The DSG is
faster than a stick - it's that good.
Good luck.
