[A4] LCD panel in dash insert

Hi all,

I'm sure this has come up before, because I know this is a very common 
fault, but I couldn't find anything in the archives.

The LCD matrix display in the dash panel in my '99 S4 has gone flaky, 
and I'm thinking about getting it fixed.

Can anybody confirm or deny what I think I already know on this topic:

- the only fix is a new dash insert
- this can only be done by an audi dealer due to the immobiliser coding 
requirements
- the going rate for supply and fitting of the insert is about £600 
(that's about 1100 USD).
