Can anybody confirm or deny what I think I already know on this topic:

as far as i know thats true. im sure you could repair it with a degree in EE
and a really nice soldering iron. =)

not so.. any repair shop with a 1552 or vagcom should be able to sort it. a
buddy just had his cluster done in his 00s4tt at an independent shop.

- the going rate for supply and fitting of the insert is about ?600

yikes. i would find a used cluster on epay and DIY - its not ahrd and im
sure there are writeups on it. you may then have to pay a shop or dealer a
few bucks to reset it.. guessing. do some research but i bet you can save a
pile on that one.
