Subject: Re: [A4] front halfshaft removal
On my 96 A4 2.8 l I removed the clamp bolt and nut and then pushed the two upper control arms out of the wheelbearing housing. If I remember correctly this allowed the wheelbearing housing to tilt enough to permit the axle shaft to be removed from the car. However, there is a good chance that the clamp bolt may be seized in the upper part of the wheelbearing housing. Audi has actually produced a special too to help remove the stuck clamp bolts-- I ordered one but the tool has been on back order for a while. If you do get the clamp bolt out I recommend that you use antiseize on the bolt and mounting hole on reassembly and buy a new self locking hex nut. Good luck.
