I haven't gone to check it, but I think my '01 manual for my 1.8T
said for normal service, change every 10,000 miles or annually
whichever comes first, and more frequently for severe service. I
live in the southwest (dust). I putz around town on short
errands. I keep a car a long time. That's severe service. So the
salesman recommended that I change every 6 months or 5000 miles,
whichever comes first. The service advisors concurred,
naturally. That's what I've done and I've used Mobil 1 since 10,000
miles. While the car was still eligible for Audi's free maintenance,
I paid for the intermediate oil changes and I paid for the Mobil 1
for all oil changes. But it is also true that Audi of America put on
a filter that was too small, or at least smaller than that used in
Europe (I think) and didn't require and pay for synthetic oil. Thus
making the cost of "free" maintenance less than it would otherwise be
from their standpoint. For quite a few years the 1.8T was ranked as
one of the 10 best engines in the world. It needs a little TLC.

So far, so good.
