[A4] Suction/Purge Valve and oil smells/leaks?

Richard,

At long last finally getting around to replying on this.

I got the parts replaced a couple of weeks ago, but wanted to drive  
for a while and see if this fixed things.  The parts are easy enough  
to get to and replace.  Both purge valve and "green valve" are  
located on the back side of the engine, right beneath the assortment  
of vacuum hoses and what not.  The hardest part about the removal and  
replacement is cutting off the old crimp on clamps.  In all, once you  
get the parts (five hose clamps, I believe three #8 and two #6, and  
the two valves) the removal and replacement takes a max of about 45- 
minutes or so.  Also cleaned off the head and heat shield over the  
manifold after replacement.

When I took the old parts off, the "green" valve was fine, but the  
suction/purge valve was partially clogged. The part that comes off  
the valve at an angle wouldn't let any air through.

Since the replacement, I've driven probably 1000-miles and am yet to  
get that oil smell again, and haven't noticed oil leaks where I'd  
seen them before.  So if you have oil leak problems, I'd say give  
this a shot as it worked for me.

If you can follow that, the green valve is right below the suction  
valve.

While I'm not as sure, I think this may have helped my gas mileage a  
bit too.

My symptoms are:
   - Oily windshield on the inside
   - Burning smell after a hard drive (sometimes)
   - Copious amounts of oil dripping off the pan and parts thereabout.

The bad part is that I can't seem to find out where the oil is coming  
from.  The block looks pretty clean and dry (at least what I can see)  
and the front camshaft seals were replaced with the timing belt.  It  
didn't seem to make any difference.

Was thinking about ordering the suction pump at the same time as my  
PCV hard
line.
