[A4] sticking hand-brake mechanism

Good morning all

My 2001 1.8tq's left rear caliper is binding in the hand-brake
mechanism.  At least I am pretty sure it's that and not the cable
itself.  I had similar problems on my old 20V and was never able to
resolve it short of replacing the caliper, which I would of course
like to avoid.  Does anyone have any tricks in freeing up the
mechanism, preferable with not removing the caliper from the car?
