[A4] changing engine coolant temperature sensor

Any BTDT?

I am getting a check engine light that my ProDiag claims is a sporadic 
high reading from the engine coolant temperature sensor.  I've bought a 
new and was planning to install it but see that there is the usual 
forest of things in the way.  Any suggestions of what has to be removed 
and if there are any tricks in getting the old one out.

Patient is a 2001 1.8t.
