IMO, that is a crazy amount to spend on repairing it, but $hit
happens and you have to deal with it. As you said that is more than
what the car is worth, which may be a good point. You can buy a nice
S4 for around 10-12G's.
We just bought a 99 1.8T quattro recently for 5500 with a new
factory engine about 20k miles ago. The total miles in the car are
about 92k, and it also has all the major components replaced, timing
belt, water pump, discs etc, just to name a few that comes to mind,
and it's been dealer serviced.
If you do decide to go for a rebuild, the only upside I see that you
will know the history of the car and all the new components it has.
Another alternative may be to do the job as cheap as possible with a
used engine and sell the car. Moneywise that may be the best alternative.
Just my 2 cents,
Zsolt
