[A4] Gas "Gauge"

As of yesterday my gas gauge is either now psychotic, looking for a serious beat down, or has a bad connection.  Of the three options, I think most likely is the third although the remainder have not been conclusively ruled out.

Basically, gas gauge fluctuates between an accurate reading and empty.  Of course when it gets to empty I also get the idiot display warning and accompanying beep.  Is there a commonly known weak spot in the associated electrical connections say at the sending unit, on the cluster, a ground etc?  Something else at fault here that?

As I've been monitoring miles to a tank I won't find myself stranded for lack of gas, but it is nice not to have to look a wildly fluctuating gauges.

Any ideas/direction would be appreciated.
