[A4] Gas "Gauge"

How's the speedometer?  A friend had a gas gauge with similar symptoms
on an A3 Golf.  However, his speedometer was doing the same:
fluctuating between the right speed and zero.  When he replaced the
sending unit for the speedometer, the gas gauge also corrected
itself.....  we're they on the same circuit and the gas gauge was
getting a ground through the speedometer sending unit????
