[A4] Gas gauge failing and shorting battery

I  have a 2003 A4 that needed a jump start and then I noticed fuel level read zero both on the gauge and the miles to empty computation. Then a few days later it was working and next time I tried to start it the battery was dead again...

First can I pull a fuse or something to disable the fuel gauge circuit so that I don't have to worry about a dead battery before I can fix it?

And then is this a known problem? Seems very early for a fuel level sensor to fail. Is it easy to access for repair?
