There are enough cam belt system failures between 60,000 miles and the 90,000
or 105,000
Audi recommended change interval to justify a shorter the interval. The high
repair cost of a failed timing belt is the real reason for such conservative
behavior. Search the Audi World forums for the prices paid and you will find
some very large repair bills. Early B5 cars had a very weak design
cambelt tensioner, later cars are much better. I do not have very much B6
experience just with the continuing problem with sludge clogging the oil pump
pickup screen.
