[A4] transmission electronics gone funky (bad)

Hi All,

Car:
Audi A4, 96 2.6L V6, 5spd Auto

Just coming home from work (had a half day, got uni this arvo), took off from 
a set of traffic lights, and the car refused to change gear. Weird I thought, 
took my foot of the accelerator, still didn't change gears, but it back down 
again, and car redlined but still didn't change gear.
I tried changing gear on the stick, nothing happened. Looked at the little 
display that tells you what gear it is in and it was blank.

As you do, I pulled over and stopped. The engine kept running, so obviously 
the clutch had disconnected (the slush box "locks" - ie has a clutch) so all 
was not lost. The display also came back but showed no gear selected, or all 
gears selected.

I tentatively drove on to find it was just like normal, but display still 
showed either all gears or none.

any ideas???
