If you are going to change out the compressor, you still need to flush the  
lines with solvent. This not only removes any debris from the dead  
compressor (even with a screen particles can still end up in the rest of  
the system,) but also removes any residual oil left in the plumbing.

Flushing isn't all that difficult. Most auto parts stored sell an  
serosol-based setup with vinly tubing and a cone-shaped rubber adaptor to  
seal against a variety of pipe sizes. I prefer to use a LIBERAL amount of  
this stuff (2-3 cans worth) when replacing a blown-up compressor.

(Check with your local authorities when it comes time to dispose of this  
solvent.)
