My stage 2 A4 clutch has been low to floor for years, it slips when i do
the occasional "drag race launch" other than that it is just fine. WHEN
I actually give in and replace it I am going to give the single mass
"light weight" all steel RS4 clutch. It is lighter than the oem dual
mass, but not as light the typical light weight fly wheels. The other
option is to purchase a used dual mass flywheel, have it resurfaced so i
can do the install all in a single day.

I agree -- if it doesn't slip in fourth or fifth gear at full
throttle on
the highway, don't replace it would be my thinking, unless it's
chattering
or otherwise behaving.
Our '97 A4 2.8 q has 201K miles on it, on the original clutch. You
said
your pedal has gotten softer, maybe you've just finally worn it in?
:-)
I'd flush and fill the clutch fluid first before talking about a
clutch...

it
Oh, that cinches it then! Don't do a clutch replacement before giving
it
to a 16 year old! Let them trash the one with 140K miles in it, and
replace it when they've figured out how to drive. :-) The clutch in
my
first car lasted a year.
So, my days on the A4 list are probably numbered... A month ago I got
a
2008 A8 to replace the '97 A4... I plan to list it for sale soon.
One-owner, if anyone is interested. :-)
