Martin,
Sounds like a classic case of failing CV joint or split boot with lack of grease in joint. The joint is most susceptible to complete failure on sharp turns, so I'd take it easy until you get the diagnosis.

Subject: [A8] 98 A8 odd sensation in sharp left turn when cold
Recently, I've noticed that when the car is cold, and I make a sharp left
turn at slow speed, the outside wheel (right front) feels like it's rolling
over sticks or marbles, and there's a low rumble (again, consistent with
rolling over sticks). After driving a while, the symptom seems to go away.
It isn't making any noise in regular driving. I recently replaced all the
suspension components, so I can't attribute it to ball joints or the like.
Any diagnoses? I'm thinking right front universal joint, but I really don't
know, nor do I know a way to test it. On visual inspection, everything
looks fine.
