I bought the identical car (same color too) a year ago from a local Colorado
dealer for 16,000 and change with 90,000 on it. Couldn't ever prove the
timing belt was replaced, so I did it anyway. Mechanic didn't think it had
when he got in there. Transmission seems a little hesitant and lurchy
starting off the line in D better in S mode, hasn't been worse in my 20,000
miles.

Notorious but not as bad as 1997-2001? Is it the torque converter
typically?

AFAIK, the only recommended service is to check for leaks. But Audi
automatic transmissions are notorious for early failures.
Flushing them seems to extend their life. Others might argue differently.
YMMV.
