[ba] Full cat back exhaust or bolt-on muffler??

I am the proud owner of a 1997 A4,(all I can say is
that I will ALWAYS own a QUATTRO!) but also a full
time student and my wallet size is extra small. My
first modification will be the exhaust system.
I am curious to know if the extra money for the full
cat-back exhaust will give me the extra performance I
crave. Or, will a after market muffler will do the
trick?
 I understand that by replacing the stock system will
increase the size of the pipe, therefore allowing the
engine to breathe easier. Is the performance I would
gain by purchasing a $600+ system marginal?
I had a 2000 golf completely tricked out w/ a Autotech
cat-back system and was extremely happy with the
performance.
Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly
appreciated!
