If it wasn't apparent, I think the $5K quote was for a turnkey deal ...
based on the looks of that 4kQ it appeared the owner wasn't afraid of
rolling up the sleeves and getting a little grease under the fingernails ...
:-)
Al tells me that he's gotten complete MC engines from the Berryessa
Pick-N-Pull for $200. When one thinks about dropping an MC into a 4k or
Coupe basically you are talking about the same thing that Audi did with the
ur-quattro, and from my understanding it can make things a bit easier if you
use urq parts. Things that you are going to have to do for sure ...
relocate the battery and figure out how to make the steering linkage to the
right strut work. I think the urq airbox with the airflow sensor plate in
front would be a big plus ... and you need to spend a little time figuring
out where the intercooler will go. The guy I know who did the 4kTQ project
within the past year is named Jeff, and he lives up in the Vacaville area.
He tells me that he wants to put together some sort of project report on the
web, but hasn't done it yet. I think he would be willing to talk to someone
who was doing a similar project ...
Personally, if I were contemplating such a project what I would do would be
to find a junk 5000T with a motor that is in good shape, and then transfer
the bits from one car to the other. When you have a whole car to source
parts fom you know that you will have all the parts and harnessing needed to
make the engine work ... and for $5K you can get a car that is in pretty
good condition! :-)
