[ba] catback on a stock 5 cylinder?

I've seen mention of the catback exhaust systems on this list and on Audi
sites.

My question is whether they are in any way beneficial to a stock or only
slightly modded motor. My exhaust is rattling again and I may need to do
something fairly substantial soon so I though I'd look into something better
if I can get any kind of performance improvement.

On motorcycles changing out the stock systems almost always gives some sort
of benefit, same thing on Audis?
