Sounds like you either have a bad thermoswitch or intermittent
wiring/contact.

I think your '82 has just a single-speed fan, right?  The different
switches are probably just different specs, designed to activate the fan 
at different temperatures.  I recommend that you stay with the stock
spec (90-95 deg C cut-in and 85-90 deg C cut-out).
