... even without the OBD check, for example on the '91 200Q, the check
engine light has to come on before the engine is started, and go off
afterward to pass.
Happy Thanksgiving all!

Not sure of the dates between which the TQ on the tiptronic had these valve
and seal leakage issues. I have heard of guys going in to specifically clean
and free up the valves, but the code is usually thrown when the seal leaks.
My attempt to circumvent the problem was a flush and tranny additive, but it
did not overcome the code and check engine light problem. Cost to replace
the TQ on the allroad is around $4,000 so it is not something you want to
rush into.
Insofar as I can't smog the car in California with the check engine light
on, and if the TQ is still running fine a year from now, when I do need to
smog it, I will pull the dash and cut the check engine light PC board
traces. I will then install two wires and bring them out to a switch tucked
up under the dash. That way I can control when the check engine light works
and when I need it off. After all, a leaky seal in the TQ has nothing to do
with emissions.
