[ba] 5 cylinder won't idle after changing out oxygen sensor

I'm sorry Michael but I don't remember what model year your car is ... if
you are messing with the idle screw I'm assuming it is an older model
without an ISV.
One of the first things I do when a change results in unexpected behavior is
to eliminate the part I just changed as the culprit. You don't need to
remove the OXS, just unplug the single wire connector (assuming your OXS is
heated) and try starting the car again. If it behaves better then you can
focus on items around the OXS. It may not be a problem with the OXS ... but
there are a couple questions ... do you know if the replacement unit is
Bosch or not? Did you apply antiseize compound to the threads? Some
already come with antiseize on the threads, but if you get it into the
sensor proper it can damage the OXS. One concern I have in general is
making sure that there is a good ground to the housing ... if you get to
this point you may want to see if you can create a temporary ground
connection from the outer shell of the OXS to a ground lug on the head or
intake manifold.
I hope that you are able to find the manual as it has some good instructions
for troubleshooting. If I have time I'll look through mine to see if there
is anything I am missing. Here again, assuming that your car has CIS (not
CIS-E) perhaps the most important thing would be to check the fuel and
control pressures ... these are key for proper operation of the CIS.
Good luck!

Subject: [ba] 5 cylinder won't idle after changing out oxygen sensor
Say Folks,
The old Coupe failed to pass smog so I did a tune up (rotor, cap, plugs, air
filter).
Ran a good bit better but I wanted to also change out the oxygen sensor
since it had been a few years.
Did that today, but now it is harder to start and will not idle.
I have to keep some pressure on the pedal and keep it above 1000 rpm.
Engine revs fine.
I assume it just got leaned way out.
Tried turning the idle screw in the manifold but it did nothing.
While changing out the sensor I had to remove the intake boot and found some
muck in the top of the big aluminum air body with the circular plate that
depresses.
To clean the muck out I did push down on it but assumed it would find it's
correct position once the engine was started.
Any clues greatly appreciated. I have been able to misplace both my manuals
(looking for them right now).
Thanks,
M./
