In addition, >'01.5 cars can be distinguished by the new style S4 badge (red Audi Sport trapezoid with "S4" sticking out) used inside and out of the car.  I've heard of some cars with both the old and new style badge, but if the instrument cluster has the new badge on the tachometer (instead of the old badge on the speedometer), then it's an '01.5 or '02 car.

I'm afraid to try a chipped car as well, but in the mean time I'm still satisfied with stock power. In your case, yes the 2.8 is slow compare to even a stock S4, and you'll want one badly once you try it ;-)
