Doesn't sound too outlandish to me. But i would for sure want to see the 
crack - the mechanic shouldn't have any trouble pointing it out to verify. 
If he wasn't on the level it wouldn't take much to call a leaky pan gasket 
[very comon] a cracked pan [way less common] and pocket a few bucks. Not to 
be paranoid, but stick your head under it.

who is the mechanic?
