Are you sure it will set a check engine light if it doesn't run? Is
there any way to disable this pump through tuning the computer? It is
probably the pump because today I was standing by the left front wheel
and it didn't necessarily sound like it was coming from the engine, more
like from the middle of the car under the drivers side door position.
What is the technical name for it? I've googled Audi tiptronic air pump
and tiptronic emissions pump and found nothing. I'd like to price one
out and see how to replace.

If you have a tiptronic its probably the air pump that you're hearing.
Manual's don't have them. It only runs for a short time after a cold
start.
