Damn; it seems I spoke too soon. The sensor fault is back with a 
vengeance, and the car failed its MOT yesterday because they couldn't 
get it to stay between 2500 and 3000 rpm...

So I gave up messing about with it, and took it to a local independent 
Audi specialist, who have prescribed a new TB, to the tune of GBP 630...
