Steering rack: is it leaking if I can't see it???????

Hey Audi Aficionados, 

My steering rack is as dry as a bone, but a mechanic
once told me it was leaking.  I though 'OK, pal' and
left it at that.  

Now I'm going to have to get a new nitrogen bomb and
was thinking I should replace the rack, too (thinking
also about rebuilding it...).  

The car's 14 years old with the original rack.

Any comments on this?
