There was a mechanic at a local VW/Audi dealer that used to change the
belt and adjust the new one with the cam gear. All I can say is that he
never did this on his own car.....just the ones he was paid book on.
I would suggest being present when the job is redone, and pressurise the
system when you have a visual of the pump, IF it's leaking at the O-ring,
or the bolts it'll be the first time in history an "undisturbed" pump
started leaking from there.
You don't mention the model, but personal experience has been that 5
cylnd. pumps fail slowly and can dribble for months. I have never had
one develop a serious leak all at once like this.
