I would like to address this. Despite common belief on the list, the
stock dual pass intercooler can easily sustain 15+ lbs boost without
bursting. The real issue lies in the pressure level when the throttle is
rapidly closed under boost conditions-such as during a shift under hard
acceleration. Straps are not needed to hold the intercooler together, but a
recirculating valve or blow off valve.
I am currently running 14 psi in my 80qt, and even after a track day and
very aggressive driving overall, I have no leakage in the dual pass
intercooler because I am running a blow off valve.
HTH,
Javad
