Valve spring compressor questions.

Today I decided to used my newly available arms to install the valve stem 
locks on an MC cylinder head.

I bumped into a small road block while using a sears valve spring 
compressor.  The jaws don't reach down into the lifter bore to get to the 
spring retainer.  Any BTDT's here or maybe an adapter that will work?

I ended up cutting a length of tubing that matches the outer diameter of the 
spring retainers.  It works but it's a big pain in the bum.  It took me a 
good 20 minutes to do one of them and a lot of effort.  In other words, I've 
only done one so far, and I'm searching for an easier way to do it.
