I think the smell is very normal.  Every engine I've
ever done, no matter what brand, major work or a
complete new motor.  The first time you really get it
hot, you burn off all kinds of stuff.  Cleaning
solvent residue, oil and grease smears, engine paint
baking the solvent out.  Very normal, even with NO
visible leaks of any kind.  It should all dry out and
stop soon.  Good luck with the new motor.  IME this is
a very exciting thing, bringing a hot motor to life.
