That's exactly what I did - why I suspect bad solenoid.
Now I just want to get the damn thing started - to get the moisture out, let
it run for awhile - I believe its not good to let engines sit, and some
moisture got on the engine while I was working on it. I also want to move
the car to a more convenient place - where it is not so wet and mosquito
infested.
Once I determine whats wrong, I can swap out the starter(friend owes me one)
if the culprit is indeed starter or solenoid.
My plan right now is to turn on ignition, out of gear, and jumper the
starter to get it started. Would be really simple if the thing was easier
to access. Maybe won't seem so difficult from under the car when jacked up
- did not seem so easy when rain pouring down laying on back in water.
Gee doesn't this sound like fun..I really aught to be committed for enjoying
this stuff as my hobby. Hey, I'm getting good at removing front end from
4k's - got it down to 3 hours - struts, control arms, tierod ends from
steering rack, brakes, axles. Transplanted back in under a day using best
parts from each car. Now I have to do the rear end. Real sick!

Says's dad, "why don't you get a GM car that you don't have to work on all
of the time."
Says me, "ask me when and if you ever get to 200+ Kmile and 15 years in your
GM."

under significant drain it can short. I will bet heavily that the water in
at least one cell is low.
>Why do you need to bridge the poles on the starter? Wouldn't it just be
easier to run a new wire with a female 1/4" spade from the battery to the
solenoid? Feel around, remove the starter solenoid trigger wire, attach the
new jumper wire in it's place...then connect to the battery...seems a lot
less dangerous to me!
