Let there be light

So, after all this attempts to shed some light on the topic of 
auxiliary lights I can't see the light in the end of the tunnel 
(theoretically and in practice - that is on the road when it's dark). 
I also have DOT (on a '88 90 Q) and had just decided to get some 
Hella (or else) to boost low beam.

If not 550 XL, then what?...is the question.
