Sounds like this mechanic of yours only wants to buy parts from the Audi
dealerships. I had a similar problem a year or so ago when time came to
deal with my brakes. Audi wanted $140 or so for rear pads and $105 or so
for each rear disc (I was down to less than 5mm thickness on the rear
discs!). A little looking around revealed that the 4 pads could be had
for $30 from a general auto store. Discs made by "Alfa" would be $45,
but I ordered the Ate discs from The Parts Connection.

Perhaps his prices are for labour as well. Call The Parts Connection and
ask them what they have.
