John, I just purchased an 87 4000S auto for my mom. 140K
miles, all records, and mint condition. An Audi mechanic
friend of mine who inspected the car said that these
automatics are pretty robust, not so much because they are
designed differently than the 5000 autos, but more because
the weight of the car and the 4 cylinder pushing it is a
more forgiving application. The 5000 must be using the same
trans, or similar, and insufficiently uprated for the 5000
application.

He also said that it is an easy rebuild should that
situation arise.
