Apart from the obvious symptoms that you'd complain about anyway,
there are really two key metrics:

a) Does the ECU store any codes?  You can check this pretty easily
   yourself using the instructions on Scott Mockry's web site at
   http://www.sjmautotechnik.com

b) Do you get nominal boost levels?  The onboard instrument is
   useless (or worse) so you need a boost test run.  The exact
   way it's done varies by car and engine - I'd suggest that a
   mechanic who doesn't know the specifics of your test isn't fit
   to touch the car.  The microfiche states that the test should
   be performed with two people in the car, so you have a perfect
   excuse to insist on going along to operate the gauge.

If you're getting no codes and boost is nominal, pretty well the only
variables left are fuel consumption and emissions.  If both are in the
green area - you're OK.
