I'm pretty sure the rear hatch itself, along with the dual-latch
mounting and the bottom plate over the bumper, provide extra reinforcement.

I know that those aforementioned items are used to stiffen the car for
handling purposes, so it makes sense for extra safety measures too.

Killing kids is bad press all around....
