Before I say anything that might be miscontrued, it
_is_ important to be paranoid and pay attention to
security. A firewall of some sort is a necessity if
you have an always-on connection to the 'net.

That said many, maybe even most,  of those pings you
see getting bounced by your software are benign. There
are a variety of reasons your address can be pinged.
And many of them are valid. A bunch more of them are
accidental, or network newbies figuring out how the
net works, pings to a subnet broadcast ip, etc.

 I would posit that evil-minded hackers are probably
the least frequent of them. 

So be careful, but don't write off humanity yet.
