two things come to mind - one, pep boys sell a ten color plastic banding
kit - two each of ten colored clip things. two, as I saw Jim Mairs
doing with his UrQ project, get a label maker at an ofice supply store -
about $40 gets you into one that will make labels that say whatever you
type in on 1/4" or 1/2" white or colored strips. very good idea.

on the passenger seat...
if you delete AC, hang it where the evaporator used to be, where it is
easy to get to.

use spare "tennis ball" cans from junk Audis as you mention. check
valves are also all over spare cars - each one, for instance, has at
least two in the main brake vacuum line. just think through the lines
and check valve setup so it makes sense! The only drawback (or two) I
see to the parts car type canisters is small orifices, you might want a
larger inlet/outlet and also maybe not enough storage cap. As i recall,
the ones from n/a cars, for the AC recirc flap, are three tennis ball
size. the old 5kt ones (pre 84, type 43) were nine ball sized i
think...
and as far as your harness issues, Marc Swanson took notes while I
chopped up the redundant stuff on his donor harness - whether they were
in a language known to man or on his web site in any form is another
issue!
